Ask yourself: do you truly listen when women speak? I was mistakenly put down for needing the shuttle rather than waiting in the waiting room. I never asked for this, and I even asked how long it would take when I made the appointment. This was annoying, but mistakes happen, I’m not unreasonable, and I needed the service done, so I didn’t have an alternative choice. I made arrangements to spend time with family and accepted the ride. Then, as I was waiting for the shuttle, two other men started asking me about what I had in the box I was carrying (“are you selling candy bars? wink wink”) like I was a naughty little Girl Scout and not an adult woman on the phone trying to make arrangements to deal with your mistake. I ignored them the first time, and they still repeated themselves until I heard because heaven forbid I ignore someone with something so important to say. Perhaps my service wouldn’t have taken so long if they were working and not worrying about what I was doing. But this is how men are, and I’m not new to Earth, so I again brushed it off. I then explained *twice* the address to which I was heading, even clarifying further that Country Club Rd in Vestal was by BU, and the driver continued to ask “Which country club?” I was going to and I clarified that there wasn’t actually a country club there, just the name of the road. He still headed in the wrong direction toward Country Club Rd in Endwell. He eventually made me use my own GPS to reroute us. As a recent victim of violence and attempted murder at the hands of a man, this made me feel especially unsafe and also, even without that trauma, frustrated because I was crystal clear every step of the way throughout my visits. Women tend to hate service appointments and car dealerships for these very reasons, and in 2023, I cannot believe we can’t do better. Figure it out!
