Because I had had a positive experience at Heartland in the past, I made an appointment to have a blank key fob programmed. I arrived early to my 1:30 appointment and was assisted courteously by several staff members to reach the Service waiting area.
When Steve called me to his desk, I clearly articulated my name and my purpose for the appointment. I presented my working fob and the one that required programming, plus a printed coupon for service discounts. “Where did you get this?” Steve barked. I replied that my son had given it to me. “You know you have to pay the $115 even if the programming doesn’t work on this...” I was instructed to go to Parts if I wanted a new one.
I signed the paperwork and crossed my fingers in the waiting room. It would be 1 to 1.5 hr.
Elyssa, QA, stopped by to ask how things were going. She was very cheerful and courteous. I gave her a summary of the abrupt interchange with Steve.
After 45 min Steve whizzed by and said work was done. He was gone before I could follow him back to his desk.
He said I was really lucky; only one out every hundred used key fobs can be programmed to work again. He produced the printed bill. After a quick glance, I mentioned that it did not reflect the coupon discount I presented earlier. “What coupon?” I pointed to the one on his desk. As I reviewed the revised bill, he looked annoyed that I was taking so long.
At the start of the 1:30 appointment , Steve indicated that I had a hybrid fuse recall notice, which he would schedule at the end of the session. I’m relieved that he didn't remember that. I’m thinking about having the recall service done elsewhere.
I am, however, thrilled that I have a second working key fob.

I felt like I was getting up sold. I was passed to three different service writers. The last service writer didn’t seem very knowledgeable. (It was 5:00p.m. and I think everyone just wanted to go home. Maybe they shouldn’t schedule 5:00 p.m. appointments.) I explained I had recently changed out the cabin air filter. She said the Tech recommended it replaced. I don’t believe they even checked.
