8 Easy Pre-Trip Safety Checks

You're getting on the road for business or pleasure, but is your car in good traveling condition for the journey ahead? By conducting a series of rather basic eight safety checks, you'll be able to get some peace of mind before you embark.

One of the first things you need to think about when it comes to safety is your visibility. If you can't clearly see the road in front of you, you're compromised and not a safe driver. So, make sure to check your:  

Exterior lights: Make certain that all of your exterior lights are fully operational. This is a rather simple task that can be carried out by flashing your headlights and rear lights on a wall. To check your brake lights, you will need someone else to hit the brakes while you stand behind the vehicle.

Glass surfaces: Glass and mirrors should be continually checked for chips, cracks and/or scratches. Also, make sure the surfaces of all your glass (including windows) is clean. I always have window cleaner and some paper towels in my car just in case.

 Windscreen wipers: Check your windscreen wipers as well as the washers to ascertain that they are operating properly. The worst thing to happen is having old wipers when that big rainstorm hits.

Horn: If we need to tell you how to check your horn, maybe you should stay home. (Just kidding, kind of.)

Handbrake: You should always test the handbrake to be sure it holds both forward and backward when parked on a hill, even if it's not that steep.

Seat belts: Your seat belts can save your life, so check their condition regularly. Look out for any damage or wear and tear on the webbing. Make sure they buckle and release properly for the safety of yourself and your passengers.

Tire pressure: Your owner’s manual will tell you what your tire pressure should be. Take a good look at all four tires to be sure they are in good condition and check tread wear and depth and don’t forget to periodically check the spare as well.

Oil: Whenever you pull out of your driveway, make sure to look under where it was parked, in order to check for any oil or coolant as this could indicate a potentially serious issue down the road.
